Emory Arts ends semester with youth, faculty, alumni concerts

The Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra performs its final concert of the semester on Wednesday, May 3, at 8 p.m. in Emerson Concert Hall.

With the academic year ending, Arts at Emory engages young and old alike with concerts and storytelling this May. The month features choral concerts from students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as a special performance by the Atlanta Master Chorale.

  • Catch the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra in their final performance of the semester. The free concert is May 3 at 8 p.m. in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts’ lovely Emerson Concert Hall.
  • The Emory Voice Faculty perform in a special concert at the Carlos Museum on May 5 at 12 p.m. for the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta’s John and Linda Cooke Noontime Series. The free concert features Brahm’s Liebeslieder and other works.
  • During Commencement weekend, Emory’s musical alumni return to campus to perform with the music department’s finest in the Cherry Emerson Memorial Alumni Concert May 7. The free performance takes place at 1:30 p.m. at Miller-Ward Alumni House.
  • On May 13, the Michael C. Carlos Museum hosts Artful Stories: The Little Hippo. Seated beneath the blue faience bowl decorated with Nile lilies, children will hear the story of an Egyptian blue hippo and then make their own blue hippopotamus figure to decorate. Geared for children ages 3-5, the event takes place from 10-11 a.m. in the Egyptian Galleries.
  • Atlanta Master Chorale: Ein Deutsches Requiem: Brahms closes out the month on a high note with concerts at 8 p.m. May 20 and 4 p.m. May 21 in the Emerson Concert Hall. Brahms’ Requiem is celebrated the world over for its power and beauty, transcending an ordinary mass. Set in German and incorporating texts from the Lutheran Bible, this piece is like no other in the chorale literature. Tickets are $30 for general admission; $25 for discount categories including Emory faculty and staff; and $10 for students.
