Big surplus sale offers deep discounts on furniture

Need chairs, desks, file cabinets, credenzas — or even a salad bar?

Get deals on all of those items and more at Emory’s big Memorial Day Surplus Sale, running Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Surplus items are sold at Emory’s Briarcliff property, Building B.

All chairs will be $5 and everything else will cost $10, according to James Harper, administrative assistant and Surplus Property contact. Only checks and money orders will be accepted (no cash or credit cards). “All sales are on a first-come, first-served basis,” he says.

Harper describes the sale inventory as “lots of desks — U-shaped, L-shaped, single desks”; all kinds of chairs ranging from office chairs to waiting area chairs to stackable ones; file cabinets; credenzas and other assorted items.

“We also have a salad bar for sale,” he notes.

For this sale, no electronics are available to buy and no online holds on specific items will be honored.

Harper says many of the items are not on the website so it’s best to come in person to see the full range of what is available. He also notes that because they are short-staffed, he and his crew will not be able to help load, so “come prepared to load and take away your purchases.”

Parking lot J is the ideal place for pick-up, he says.

The sale is for Emory staff, faculty and students only. “We want to give back to the Emory community that has done so much for us,” Harper says. “And we have a large inventory at this time.”

Unsold items will remain in inventory. “We want to keep everything out of the landfill,” he explains. The sale is part of Emory’s Sustainability Initiatives.

During the summer, the Surplus Property office will revert to its regular open times of Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
