Emory University is closed Tuesday, Sept. 12, due to conditions related to Hurricane Irma.  Please avoid venturing out on campus. We are conducting damage assessments and clearing debris. There are still risks from falling trees. 

This closing applies only to the University. Emory Healthcare employees should refer to the EHC intranet and emails from Emory Healthcare for information on operations and procedures.

Emory University will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 12, due to severe weather conditions related to Hurricane Irma:  Heavy rain, destructive winds, flash flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes are anticipated.

Emory University is closed Monday, Sept. 11, due to severe weather conditions related to Hurricane Irma. 

The storm is approaching metro Atlanta this afternoon. Anticipate heavy rain, destructive winds, flash flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes. Avoid travel, as conditions will deteriorate as the storm enters the metro area.

8:50 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017

Emory University’s campuses have been placed under a Tropical Storm Warning by the National Weather Service. A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical storm wind conditions are expected somewhere within this area and within the next 36 hours. Emory University is closely monitoring the potential for severe weather.

When:

Monday morning until early Tuesday morning

Threats:

  • DESTRUCTIVE WIND: Equivalent Tropical Storm force wind. Peak Wind Forecast: 40-50 mph with gusts to 70 mph
  • FLOODING RAIN: Flash Flood Watch is in effect. Peak Rainfall Amounts: Additional 4-8 inches, with locally higher amounts
  • TORNADOES: Situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes

Potential Impacts:

  • Downed Trees
  • Scattered power and communications outages
  • Dangerous Flooding possible
  • Tornadoes

As Hurricane Irma approaches Florida and Georgia, Emory University is closely monitoring the potential for severe weather forecast to arrive locally late Monday, Sept. 11, continuing into Tuesday.

Potential impacts to our campuses include heavy rain, strong winds and possibly tornadoes. Additional threats and timing will be determined by the path and intensity of the storm.
