Travel tips for Commencement Day

Plan ahead for getting around campus and the adjacent areas on Commencement Day Monday, May 14, particularly in the morning. Transportation and Parking Services, which has an extensive role in managing logistics for the day, offers information and tips:

For Commencement travel

Free shuttle service is available from all parking areas to the Quad and to event venues.

The Emory Conference Center Hotel will have its own shuttle operating for Commencement, going to and from the front portico of the hotel.

The shuttle schedules are changed for the earlier part of the day and these adjustments are posted on transportation.emory.edu.

Parking on campus for Commencement events is free in designated Emory parking decks only.

For mobility-impaired guests, the Oxford Road deck is the preferred parking area.  There is also the option of an accessible drop-off curbside on Dowman Drive between the Administration Building and White Hall.

The Peavine surface lot is the overflow location for mobility-impaired guest parking, while the Fishburne deck is reserved for VIP parking.

For more information, see the "Planning your visit to Emory's Commencement" section on www.emory.edu/commencement.

For regular travel

Advises Transportation and Parking Services' Alice Sloan: "We'd really like to encourage teleworking for employees that can do so, or to delay their arrival to campus until about 9 a.m. Of course, they would need to clear this with their supervisors, but that's the greatest help to easing congestion on that day."

All shuttles are likely to experience delays until about 8-8:30 a.m. because of the influx of vehicular traffic.

Because of the planned changes, Sloan says, "TransLoc (the shuttle tracking system) probably won't be of much value to Emory employees until after 2 p.m. when shuttles return to their regular routes."
